Overstretching your muscle results in a pulled or strained muscle. Usually, a rapid, explosive movement, exhaustion, overuse, or incorrect muscle use causes this. Although strains can occur in any muscle, they most frequently occur in the neck, lower back, and legs. Sometimes the area where a muscle has been pulled will be bruised.

The RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) model has historically been used to treat muscle strains early on. MICE stands for movement, ice, compression, and elevation, and it has been modified recently. In the early stages of recovery, movement within one's tolerance is crucial for function restoration, scar tissue reduction, and swelling removal. According to certain research, "contrast therapy," which involves switching between ice and heat, can be beneficial.

The greatest predictor of injury is previous injury.  A proper rehabilitation plan will help prepare the body against the possibility of further injury.

At Performance Sport & Spine, chiropractic adjustments, manual therapy, and corrective exercise have helped many Quincy residents who have experienced muscle strains. Every patient is treated individually because every person is different. Our general strategy for relieving muscle strains is described below.

  • Cut down on inflammation and pain. Kinesiology taping, gentle soft tissue work, and laser therapy can all help achieve this.

  • The joints surrounding the injured muscle should be loosened. Stuck joints can be properly moved again with chiropractic adjustments, which can enhance muscle function.

  • Stretches and corrective exercise help the body regain its alignment and balance, which reduces pain and keeps it from coming back.
