Heavy Lifting

The neck, low back, and infrequently the upper back can all experience bulging discs. One of the most frequent causes of neck and low back pain is disc injuries. From minor irritations to bulges to herniations, their severity varies. Fortunately, it is possible for even the most severe disc injuries to heal without the need for surgery!

What Causes Disc Injuries?

Research on cadaver spines has demonstrated that repeated flexion and compression can harm discs. Repetitive lifting of heavy objects with rounded spines is a simple example; this is why the old saying, "Don't lift with your back, lift with your legs," is true. This can cause a disc to progressively deteriorate over time.

What are symptoms of a disc injury?

  • Low back pain, pain radiating into the hip or leg, pain when sitting or standing up from a seated position, trouble bending, and pain when coughing or sneezing are all possible symptoms of low back disc injuries.

  • Neck disc injuries can cause pain in the neck as well as pain that travels down the arm or shoulder.
